Stavanger Gourmet Capital

In Stavanger, with its modest 150,000 inhabitants, having a three-star Michelin restaurant is almost unbelievable, says Torill Renaa, the manager of the Michelin-starred restaurant Re-Naa in Stavanger to Aftenbladet.

"It really shouldn't have been possible, considering the customer base and the challenge of finding the necessary staff to run one of the world's best restaurants. I still have to pinch myself to believe we've achieved this."

Torill Renaa is a trained waitress and sommelier, and married to star chef Sven Erik Renaa. The couple met in 2001 at Stavanger Wine Festival, and over 15 years, they have together built the establishments Sirkus Renaa, Matbaren bistro, and Re-Naa in Norway's oil capital.

"I love living in Stavanger. The city is a charming small town that, thanks to its status as the oil capital, also gives an international feel," says the 49-year-old, who, as far as Kapital is aware, is the only female operator of a three-star restaurant in the Nordics.

This year, Re-Naa received three stars in the Michelin Guide, as the only one outside a capital city in the Nordics.

"Everything is within reach."

"One of the best things about Stavanger is the proximity to everything. Whether you're going to the theater, concert, or restaurant, everything is just a short walk away."

The city's wooden houses and Vågen as a natural center give it a unique atmosphere, she believes.

"For me, old Stavanger is a nostalgic highlight. It is unique with Northern Europe's largest collection of well-preserved wooden houses, some dating back to the 1700s."
